Holiday Centerpieces
First, Lilly Downing showed us how to make an arrangement in 5 minutes
or less. Just arrange Leyland cypress in a basket, top with apples and
then insert holly to hold the apples in place. You can also substitute
a metal plate for the basket.
Second, Susan Dallen did a series of demonstrations:
- Pear or leaf - place markers.
- Gourds and things
- Grapevine wreaths - Get everything that you need for under $10 at
Michael's. Use a glue gun and cut the flower stems short before applying
them to the wreath. Fall flowers for a Thanksgiving wreath or
Poinsettias for a Christmas wreath.
- Pedestal platter - Arrange oranges on top of boxwood for a quick
and easy centerpiece.
- Vase - Cranberries plus water plus floating candle.
- Whimsical Turkey - uses chrysanthemums, leather leaf ferns and
a bird of paradise.
- Pumpkin vase
Finally, Anza Robinson demonstrated what she had learned at the
Fulton Federation of Garden Clubs. Click the link below for a more detailed
description:
Business Meeting
- Grace Quinn read the minutes of the last meeting.
- Peggy Becker read the treasurer's report.
- Fritzi Herring provided the neighborhood report. There has been some
concern about the lack of wild birds at neighborhood feeders; however,
this is probably because the birds have plenty of berries and seeds
available this time of year.
- Helen Wright discussed the baskets and cards which will be
distributed. Baskets are delivered to the physically challenged who
remain in the neighborhood. Cards are sent to those who have moved
to nursing homes. The cards were circulated at both the last Garden
Club and the last Civic Association meetings for signatures.
- Scrapbooks will be available at the next Garden Club meeting.
- Judy Pilsch provided some conservation tips. There is a group
collecting used cell phones, motor oil and rechargeable batteries.
Also, Fulton County is selling composters for $20 on Saturday,
November 17, at the Target Store in Sandy Springs.
- Lilly Downing gave the horticultural hints:
- Plant bulbs now. Dig the hole twice as deep as the size of the
bulb. Plant near lilies and hostas.
- Pansies - Still OK to plant the larger pansies. Water well
before planting. Fertilize planted pansies.
- Pull up impatiens before the first frost.
- Laurie Schwarz discussed several topics. Click the links
for more details.
- Big tree search
- Upcoming educational events for the ABG.
- Wonderful World of Ivies - A symposium and
hands-on workshop. Must register by January 1, 2002 for this event
which occurs April 23, 2002.
- National calendar of floral arrangements.
